An update from Julia

posted by Sue

Greetings to you all,

March and April were spent in Australia catching up with family and friends, making new friends, and also some time in ministry.

On return to Kenya, after 2 weeks in Nairobi, I went to Western Kenya to a place called Nambale, which is near Busia and close to the Ugandan the border. It gave me great joy to see the progress this church had made; I was there 2 years ago and the church had only a few members, it is now a vibrant church with 160 adults and 70 children and many of the members showing strong growth in their walk with the Lord. They have just started another church about 10 ks away. This new church is in a shop, one of a row of shops in a small village. I ministered in the there for 1 week and saw a number of people give their lives to the Lord: all the people in the row of shops committed their lives to Jesus and also the government chief over the area. The 2 motor bike riders who taxied us to and from this church both gave their lives to the Lord on the last day when they dropped us off at the house I was staying at.

Following 3 weeks in Nambale I proceeded to Nangina, about 35 ks South of Busia, to a church I had helped start early last year. Here the church was struggling due to strong spiritual opposition; it was said when the church was started that a church could not succeed in that place. I spent one month with them and the church is again going ahead, praise the Lord! We saw some wonderful miracles there: A lady in the church had 2 children who were very sick in hospital, one about a year old and the other, who was in a coma, about 9 yrs. Pastor had rung me just before I was due to go there asking me to pray for the 2 children, which I did: the youngest was healed straight away and the older one, a girl, came out of the coma but was still very sick. The pastor and I visited the hospital a couple of days after I came to Nangina. When I arrived I was just in time to see the child (Mercy) lifted from one bed to another, she was just like a rag doll giving the
appearance of being unconscious but I was told that she had spoken. I prayed asking the Lord what was happening and He told me that the Mercy had been dedicated to satan when a baby by someone in the village and that he was stopping her receiving healing. Mercy’s mother was a member of the church but the father was in one of the sects. The youngest child who was healed straight after prayer had been dedicated to the Lord, Mercy hadn’t. Mercy was then dedicated to the Lord by the parents and we prayed again for healing. Two days later Mercy was sitting up supported by her mother drinking from a cup that the mother held, another 2 days and she was able to hold the cup herself, 4 days later she was discharged from hospital and 10 days later in church testifying to what God had done! I was told that Mercy loved God and always been keen to go to church. Three days after leaving hospital, a Sunday, she was in tears because her parents would not take her with them to church; they considered it too early for her to go. During Mercy’s illness her father gave his life to the Lord: all things work together for good to those who love God (Rom 8:28)! After Mercy went home the father met one of the hospital’s laboratory technicians who said “You have a very powerful God, to us she was as dead, there was nothing we could do for her”. The people in the village also found it very hard to believe what had happened and they had made all necessary preparations for Mercy’s funeral.

The hospital bills were high and Mercy’s father was a farmer and therefore had very little money; he tried to sell his land but no one wanted to buy it, if he could not pay the bill the children would be kept in hospital until it was paid the bill continually getting higher. Thanks to your gifts I was able to pay this bill for them.

Another family your gifts were a blessing to was one that had a boy in his last year at university, the mother’s brother died and the money that should have paid the boys fees had to go for funeral expenses. The boy had to drop out of university but I was able to pay his fees for him and he was able to resume his studies.

A lady came with severe chest pain saying she could no longer work because of the pain. It was revealed that she had lung cancer caused by her inhaling the smoke from the fires they dried the fish on that were caught in Lake Victoria. They burn anything they can lay their hands on and frequently this is plastics. She was prayed for and 5 days later testified in church that she had been totally healed.

A number of ladies came with very young babies saying they had been prayed for last year for infertility. One man who had aids and was infertile a year ago was now fit and well and his wife had a baby daughter while I was there.

People in the Nangina area are saying that the drinking of alcohol has decreased substantially in the area since the church started.

TRULY WE HAVE THE MOST AWESOME GOD!

I met a very interesting animal while I was in Nangina. It was a bit bigger than a mouse, but did not look like a rat nor was it rat size. It was night time the light in my room was on and I was standing about 9 meters from the door when through the door, like a cartoon character, shot this little creature; it almost collided with me, jammed on the brakes, did a rapid about face and shot back out of the door. It was greyish in colour with a tail that looked like a bottle brush, a bit like a squirrel’s tail, hairs of the same length but no where near as many. Five minutes later I heard it above the ceiling busy doing whatever these creatures do in such places. It was a frequent night visitor, I think I had taken over IT’S room. It seemed to have only one speed: flat out, and it was therefore difficult to get a really good look at it.

God bless you and keep you, Your sister in Christ, Julia.

Experiencing Intimacy With God

posted by Sue

We receive “Our Daily Bread” from RBC Ministries which is a good way to give yourself a little bit of God’s word every day (they’re free by the way, if you want to sign up at their website). Every time they send out a new booklet for the quarter they also send out a booklet with it’s own topic.

One that has recently touched my heart (and a few others around me) is Experiencing Intimacy With God (downloadable HERE 190kb) by Joseph M Stowell. If you’ve ever felt “ripped off” because someone else might have a bolt of lightning moment with God and you’re still plodding along, please read it.

Enjoy, I hope it makes a difference in your life as it has mine.

Just checking in

posted by Sue

A Minister passing through his church
In the middle of the day,
Decided to pause by the altar
and see who had come to pray.

Just then the back door opened,
A man came down the aisle;
The minister frowned as he saw
the man hadn’t shaved in a while.

His shirt was kind a shabby
And his coat was worn and frayed,
the man knelt, he bowed his head,
Then rose and walked away.

In the days that followed,
Each noon time came this chap,
each time he knelt just for a moment,
A lunch pail in his lap.

Well, the minister’s suspicions grew,
With robbery a main fear,
He decided to stop the man and ask him,
‘What are you doing here?’

The old man said he worked down the road.
Lunch was half an hour.
Lunchtime was his prayer time,
For finding strength and power.

‘I stay only moments, see,
because the factory is so far away;
as I kneel here talking to the Lord,
This is what I say:

‘I JUST CAME AGAIN TO TELL YOU, LORD,
HOW HAPPY I’VE BEEN,
SINCE WE FOUND EACH OTHER’S FRIENDSHIP
AND YOU TOOK AWAY MY SIN.
DON’T KNOW MUCH OF HOW TO PRAY,
BUT I THINK ABOUT YOU EVERYDAY.
SO, JESUS, THIS IS JIM
CHECKING IN TODAY .’

The minister feeling foolish,
Told Jim, that was fine.
He told the man he was welcome
To come and pray just anytime.

Time to go, Jim smiled, said ‘Thanks.’
He hurried to the door.
The minister knelt at the altar,
He’d never done it before.

His cold heart melted, warmed with love,
And met with Jesus there.
As the tears flowed, in his heart,
he repeated old Jim’s prayer:

‘I JUST CAME AGAIN TO TELL YOU, LORD,
HOW HAPPY I’VE BEEN,
SINCE WE FOUND EACH OTHER’S FRIENDSHIP
AND YOU TOOK AWAY MY SIN.
I DON’T KNOW MUCH OF HOW TO PRAY, BUT
I THINK ABOUT YOU EVERYDAY.
SO, JESUS, THIS IS ME CHECKING IN TODAY ‘

Past noon one day, the minister noticed
That old Jim hadn’t come.
As more days passed without Jim,
He began to worry some.

At the factory, he asked about him,
Learning he was ill.
The hospital staff was worried,
But he’d given them a thrill.

The week that Jim was with them,
Brought changes in the ward.
His smiles, a joy contagious.
Changed people, were his reward.

The head nurse couldn’t understand
Why Jim was so glad,
when no flowers, calls or cards came,
Not a visitor he had.

The minister stayed by his bed,
He voiced the nurse’s concern:
No friends came to show they cared.
He had nowhere to turn

Looking surprised, old Jim spoke
up and with a winsome smile;
‘the nurse is wrong, she couldn’t know,
that in here all the while
everyday at noon He’s here,
a dear friend of mine, you see,
He sits right down, takes my hand,
Leans over and says to me:

‘I JUST CAME AGAIN TO TELL YOU, JIM,

HOW HAPPY I HAVE BEEN,
SINCE WE FOUND THIS FRIENDSHIP,
AND I TOOK AWAY YOUR SIN.
ALWAYS LOVE TO HEAR YOU PRAY,
I THINK ABOUT YOU EACH DAY,
AND SO JIM, THIS IS JESUS
CHECKING IN TODAY .

Many people will walk in and out of your life,
but only true friends will leave
Footprints in your heart.

May God hold you in the palm of His hand
And Angels watch over you.

But for those of us who are already His, He not
only holds us in the palm of His hand, but has
engraved our names there, and we are continually
in His sight (Isaiah 49:16)

Jesus said, ‘ If you are ashamed of me,’ I will be ashamed
Of you before my Father.’

Yes, I do love God. He is my source of existence and Savior.

He keeps me functioning each and everyday. Without Him, I
will be nothing. Without him, I am nothing but with Him ‘I can
do all things through Christ that strengthens me.’ Phil 4:13

So this is me … Just Checking In

What happens when routine is gone?

posted by Sue

Interesting day at church today.

There were lots of people away, quite common during the school holidays.

We had no-one to greet people at the door.

We had no-one to set up communion.

We had one person doing the majority of the service (announcements, worship etc).

We had no musicians (until one thankfully volunteered).

We had no-one to run the worship program for the data projector or record the message for here.

There were no overheads in the office to use for photocopying.

So the service started with some acapella singing of a few songs that we all knew, with music for some being provided by an Ipod and speakers. In my opinion it was great!!

But…

Hardly a person stood to sing.

Why? Because no-one asked them to. Not until the very last song of the service were they asked to stand and they stood.

People looked confused, baffled and not quite sure, not at ease.

Why am I blogging about this? Because I think it’s really important. Today showed that many people of our church may have become stuck in the “routine” of church. The whole idea that we come each week and do this, this and this, in this order, and then it’s over, we chat and leave.

But what is church really?

Church is simply Christians getting together to worship God and to learn together. To fellowship, share and rejoice. It is not about whether we have the right music (or any), what order we do things in, who does what, what building we’re in or any of that.

We need to strip ourselves back to bare basics. Let’s celebrate our Christianity together, let’s worship God, let’s praise Him, let’s learn together. It just so happens we do it in the same building at the same address most Sunday’s. But church can be anywhere, any time.

CHURCH IS IN YOUR HEART, IN YOUR SOUL, NOT IN A ROUTINE, NOT IN A BUILDING.

I want to see the Holy Spirit bless our church, bring it together with a shared vision for our community. But we can’t do that until we open ourselves up. The change has to come through us first.

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if you stand, sit, dance, kneel - as long as you are worshipping honestly and openly. Let’s find some passion so we can show everyone how good we know God really is!
