			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Greetings in Jesus Christ&#8217;s name,</p>
<p>At the moment I am in Scotland having my yearly break. Prior to this I was in Western Kenya, near Lake Victoria, at the Nangina Church. This is a young church I helped start two and a half years ago. I wrote to you in one of my news letters last year about this church and told you it was struggling and asked you to pray for it. Well your prayers have been answered: the church is growing and now appears healthy.</p>
<p>When the Nangina church was started many people said a church could not succeed in this place for many had tried and had failed. When the church building was first erected it was revealed it had been built directly over an altar to satan. This year the locals have been opening up to Lawrence the Pastor saying they are pleased that the church has purchased this plot of land because many bad things have happenned there: animals were slaughtered and many people raped, it was a dangerous place.</p>
<p>One of the first converts to Christ was Joseph, a man feared by the community: he was a devil worshipper and used to call up the spirits of his ancestors. Joseph&#8217;s life was totally changed by God. This man has become an evangelist: while I was there he was continually bringing people to church for prayer so they could come to know Jesus and be set free by Him. All these people came because they said they could see the change in Joseph&#8217;s life and they wanted what he had. One of these people was his mother, she previously had been very frightened of him: Joseph would periodically chase her out of her home and around the village brandishing a panga - a large flat bladed tool and or weapon used for almost anything that needed cutting from grass to branches off trees or killing people.</p>
<p>Joseph&#8217;s relationship with his his wife, Praskila,  has changed considerably: previously he treated her very badly and with contempt - one thing was that she had to cook his meals take them to the table and place them before him, then return to the kitchen and eat her meals there. If she took her meal also to the table and sat down Joseph would not eat or say a word but just sit there angrily glaring at her until she picked up her plate and went back to the kitchen. After 9 years she could take no more of his behavious, she left him and went to Nairobi. Praskila, a Christain, went to 2 different churches in Nairobi and both Pastors told her to go back to her husband because he needed her, she returned to Joseph. She was rewarded by his becoming a Christian! Joseph stood up next to his wife, in front of the church, and declared that he loved his wife and that they had never known such happiness. In Africa a man does not sit or stand next to his wife let<br />
 alone say in public that he loves her! Nothing is impossible with our God!</p>
<p>Joseph went to all the people in the village that he had been having problems with (most of the people) and asked them to forgive him for anything he had done to them; they all invited him into their houses and ate and drank with him. Joseph said that he now knew what the problem had been in the village: it was him!</p>

<h4>Did you know that God commands us to be glad?</h4>
<p><em>&#8220;Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your  heart.&#8221;</em> (Psalm 37:4)</p>
<p><strong>1) God created us for his glory</strong></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth,&#8230;  whom I created for my glory&#8221;</em> (Isaiah 43:6-7)</p>
<p>God made us to magnify his greatness - the way telescopes magnify stars. He  created us to put his goodness and truth and beauty and wisdom and justice on  display. The greatest display of God&#8217;s glory comes from deep delight in all that  he is. This means that God gets the praise and we get the pleasure. God created  us so that he is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.</p>
<p><strong>2) Every human should live for God&#8217;s glory</strong></p>
<p><em>&#8220;So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory  of God&#8221;</em> (1 Corinthians 10:31).</p>
<p>If God made us for his glory, it is clear that we should live for his glory.  Our duty comes from his design. So our first obligation is to show God&#8217;s value  by being satisfied with all that he is for us. This is the essence of loving God  (Matthew 22:37) and trusting him (1 John 5:3-4) and being thankful to him (Psalm  100:2-4) It is the root of all true obedience, especially loving others  (Colossians 1:4-5).</p>
<p><strong>3) All of us have failed to glorify God as we should</strong></p>
<p><em>&#8220;All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God&#8221;</em> (Romans 3:23).</p>
<p>What does it mean to &#8220;fall short of the glory of God?&#8221; It means that none of  us has trusted and treasured God the way we should. We have not been satisfied  with his greatness and walked in his ways. We have sought our satisfaction in  other things, and treated them as more valuable than God, which is the essence  of idolatry (Romans 1:21-23). Since sin came into the world we have all been  deeply resistant to having God as our all-satisfying treasure (Ephesians 2:3).  This is an appalling offense to the greatness of God (Jeremiah 2:12-13).</p>
<p><strong>4) All of us are subject to God&#8217;s just condemnation</strong></p>
<p><em>&#8220;The wages of sin is death&#8230;&#8221;</em> (Romans 6:23).</p>
<p>We have all belittled the glory of God. How? By preferring other things above  him. By our ingratitude, distrust and disobedience. So God is just in shutting  us out from the enjoyment of his glory forever. &#8220;They will suffer the punishment  of eternal destruction and exclusion from the presence of the Lord and from the  glory of his might&#8221; (2 Thessalonians 1:9).</p>
<p>The word &#8220;hell&#8221; is used in the New Testament twelve times - eleven times by  Jesus himself. It is not a myth created by dismal and angry preachers. It is a  solemn warning from the Son of God who died to deliver sinners from its curse.  We ignore it at great risk.</p>
<p>If the Bible stopped here in its analysis of the human condition, we would be  doomed to a hopeless future. However, this is not where it stops&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>5) God sent his only son Jesus to provide eternal life and  joy</strong></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus  came into the world to save sinners&#8230;&#8221;</em> (1 Timothy 1:15)</p>
<p>The good news is that Christ died for sinners like us. And he rose physically  from the dead to validate the saving power of his death and to open the gates of  eternal life and joy (1 Corinthians 15:20). This means God can acquit guilty  sinners and still be just (Romans 3:25-26). &#8220;For Christ died for sins once for  all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God&#8221; (1 Peter 3:18).  Coming home to God is where all deep and lasting satisfaction is found.</p>
<p><strong>6) The benefits purchased by the death of Christ belong to those who  repent and trust him</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out&#8221; (Acts  3:19). &#8220;Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved&#8221; (Acts 16:31).</p>
<p>&#8220;Repent&#8221; means to turn from all the deceitful promises of sin. &#8220;Faith&#8221; means  being satisfied with all that God promises to be for us in Jesus. &#8220;He who  believes in me,&#8221; Jesus says, &#8220;shall never thirst&#8221; (John 6:35). We do not earn  our salvation. We cannot merit it (Romans 4:4-5). It is by grace through faith  (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is a free gift (Romans 3:24). We will have it if we  cherish it above all things (Matthew 13:44). When we do that, God&#8217;s aim in  creation is accomplished: He is glorified in us and we are satisfied in him -  forever.</p>
<h4>Does this make sense to you?</h4>
<p>Do you desire the kind of gladness that comes from being satisfied with all  that God is for you in Jesus? If so, then God is at work in your life.</p>
<h4>What should you do?</h4>
<p>Turn from the deceitful promises of sin. Call upon Jesus to save you from the  guilt and punishment and bondage. &#8220;All who call upon the name of the Lord will  be saved&#8221; (Romans 10:13). Start banking your hope on all that God is for you in  Jesus. Break the power of sin&#8217;s promises by faith in the superior satisfaction  of God&#8217;s promises. Begin reading the Bible to find his precious and very great  promises, which can set you free (2 Peter 1:3-4). Find a Bible-believing church  and begin to worship and grow together with other people who treasure Christ  above all things (Philippians 3:7).</p>
<p>The best news in the world is that there is no necessary conflict between our  happiness and God&#8217;s holiness. Being satisfied with all that God is for us in  Jesus magnifies him as a great Treasure.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in  your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.&#8221;</em> (Psalm 16:11)</p>

<h4>Bible Verses</h4>
<p>Jesus replied: &#8220;`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your  soul and with all your mind.&#8217;&#8221; (Matthew 22:37)</p>
<p>This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not  burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory  that has overcome the world, even our faith. (1 John 5:3-4)</p>
<p>Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that  the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his [1]; we are his people,  the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with  praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. (Psalms 100:2-4)</p>
<p>&#8230;because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you  have for all the saints&#8211;the faith and love that spring from the hope that is  stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of  truth, the gospel&#8230; (Colossians 1:4-5)</p>
<p>For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks  to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. <p>Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an  obligation. However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies  the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness. (Romans 4:4-5)</p>
<p>For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith&#8211;and this not from  yourselves, it is the gift of God&#8211;not by works, so that no one can boast.  (Ephesians 2:8-9)</p>

<h4>Appearances of the word &#8220;hell&#8221; in the New Testament</h4>

<p>I have mixed feelings about making New Year&#8217;s resolutions. In the first  place, I&#8217;m not certain that it&#8217;s a Biblical concept. The Holy Spirit, not a New  Year&#8217;s resolution, is the Agent of meaningful transformation in our lives. If,  instead, our focus is on what we can do in our own strength, making resolutions  has the same feel to it as the widely established non-biblical doctrine that  &#8220;The Lord helps them that help themselves.&#8221; The truth is, if you added the word  &#8220;cannot,&#8221; as in &#8220;The Lord helps them that <em>cannot</em> help themselves,&#8221;  you&#8217;d be on the road to sound biblical doctrine.</p>
<p>Another potential pitfall with New Year&#8217;s resolutions is intentionally  waiting for New Year&#8217;s Day to fix something that is broken, especially if sin is  involved. Sin needs our immediate attention. It&#8217;s the same feeling you get when  you hear an inexperienced parent give a disobedient child &#8220;until the count of  three&#8221; to obey. The take-away message for the child, of course, is that a  deferred 33% obedience rate is acceptable. In reality, &#8220;obey&#8221; and &#8220;later&#8221; (or  &#8220;next year&#8221;) don&#8217;t work well together in the same sentence.</p>
<p>On the other hand, if anyone should have reason to make a New Year&#8217;s  resolution, it should be Christians. We have been freed from the bondage of sin  by the Holy Spirit, Who is able to effect genuine transformation in our lives.  If you want a picture of this liberation, put yourself in the place of the  demon-possessed man in Mark 5:1-20. If God can overcome the spiritual bondage  described in that passage, He can overcome the sin patterns in our life as well.</p>
<p>Jonathan Edwards was a man who made resolutions, though not in the form of  New Year&#8217;s resolutions. In his long list of resolutions He included: &#8220;Resolved,  to live with all my might while I do live; Resolved, never to lose one moment of  time, but improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can; Resolved, never  to do anything, which if I should see in another, I should count a just occasion  to despise him for, or to think any way the more meanly of him; Resolved, never  to do anything out of revenge; Resolved, that I will live so as I shall wish I  had done when I come to die.&#8221;</p>
<p>For most, a more focused and realistic goal would be a resolution to  cooperate with the Holy Spirit in order to be delivered from one particular area  of sin in your life.</p>
<p>This will not come as a surprise to non-Christian onlookers, but just  <em>being saved</em> does not give Christians immediate deliverance from sin  patterns, especially those that have been developing over many years. Addictions  to alcohol, drugs, and pornography, for example, are extremely hard to break.  Nevertheless, there are concrete steps that you can take to put yourself in the  path of God&#8217;s grace for deliverance from all types of sin, but you must be  resolute in your determination to be freed.</p>
<p>In my Father&#8217;s Day sermon this year, I identified seven principles that every  father must teach his children. One of those principles had to do with dealing  with temptation and life-dominating sin. Here is an outline of a practical  series of steps that you can follow when you are tempted to turn towards sin in  your life:</p>
<p>1) First we should thank God for the temptation; it is an opportunity for our  personal growth. Begin with a prayer to God thanking Him for the trial.  Remember, it is not a sin to be tempted - temptation becomes sin when we turn  towards that temptation in the direction of sin.</p>
<p>2) Next we must move away from the direction of the sin. If it is coming at  you, change your course. Put as much distance as you can between you and the  source of the temptation - run if you have to.</p>
<p>3) As you are moving way from the source of temptation, quote scripture that  you have memorized that applies directly to the area of temptation. For example,  if your struggle is with sexual immorality, quote 1 Corinthians 6:18-20. <em>Do  this while you are moving away from the source of temptation</em>.</p>
<p>You can get help from your pastor, an elder, or another qualified trained  counselor in your church to help identify scripture that applies your sin and to  help identify other spiritual disciplines that can be employed to reduce the  incidence of temptation.</p>
<p>4) Find yourself an &#8220;angel of accountability.&#8221; Confess to that person that  there is a specific sin that you are struggling with and ask that person to hold  you accountable in that area. More is said about accountability partners below.</p>
<p>5) Finally, make for yourself and carry around a &#8220;think and do list&#8221; specific  to your particular sin - sometimes called a &#8220;Philippians 4 list.&#8221; In Philippians  4:8-9 we read <em>&#8220;Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble,  whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -  if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. Whatever you  have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me - put it into practice.  And the God of peace will be with you.&#8221; </em></p>
<p>So work with your accountability partner to make up a card or group of cards  - one for each &#8220;whatever is&#8230;&#8221; in Philippians 4:8 - and come up with a list of  things that you can do that would be admirable, or lovely, etc. This completes  the process of dealing with the sin. The first part is to &#8220;put off&#8221; the sin; the  last part is to &#8220;put something good on in its place.&#8221; That is, do something  good!</p>
<p>Your accountability partner MUST be willing to ask you pointed questions,  such as the following two, each week; moreover, you must promise to answer  honestly and to hide nothing from your accountability partner. The first  question is &#8220;How many times were you tempted in your sin area this week?&#8221; The  second question is &#8220;How many times did you turn towards the sin?&#8221;</p>
<p>As you struggle for freedom from sin patterns you will be tempted over and  over again - consider keeping a detailed count of the number of times you are  tempted for the purpose of tracking progress. It is NO sin to be tempted. We sin  the moment we take a small step in the direction of the sin (rather than running  away from the temptation). We sin the moment we hesitate from turning away from  temptation. Again, to track progress, consider keeping, and reporting, a count  of the number of times you actually sinned.</p>
<p>One other recommendation regarding your selection of an accountability  partner - consider making it someone that you ABSOLUTELY do not want to have to  report failure to, such as a younger Christian who considers you more mature in  your faith, but who is mature enough to handle helping you with your spiritual  temptations. Knowing that you will have to report failure, and knowing that it  is someone to whom you do not want to have to report failure, is powerful  motivation that will make you think before sinning.</p>
<p>This sounds like a lot of work, and it is - but if you employ these steps in  dealing with sin struggles and in getting control over your thought-life, there  is no reason to be resigned to defeat. Why not make a New Year&#8217;s resolution to  gain victory over one sin area in your life? And why not start working on that  resolution today?</p></div>
